In this paper we introduce what we call the "text illustration problem": Given a (scientific or technical) text which a user is studying and interacting with, as well as a collection of geometric models pertaining to the (lomain of the text. Produce customized, accompanying illustrations. We provide a framework for solving this problem and show how knowledge representation can enhance the quality of the illustrations generated. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach through a prototypical system and show the results of applying it in the area of anatomy.
