The initial motivation for our research was the desire to build working Concurrent Engineering (CE) systems. Within the last two years have built two systems with many CE characteristics. As it is difficult to produce a precise description of CE on which all researchers would agree, we will refrain from claiming that they are CE systems. However, most would agree that the essential quality is that at design time it is important to consider the impact of the design on aspects from later in the life-cycle, such as packaging, or recycling. The systems built support these considerations.
