With the increasing variety of electronically available speech and text that crosses national boundaries on the global internet and other networks, there is an increasing need for systems capable of providing access to information in multiple languages. This symposium was designed to bring together researchers from the fields of information retrieval, speech processing, computational linguistics, knowledge organization, and machine translation to address the problem of constructing such multilingual systems.
