AAAI-12 EAAI Symposium: February 8

Dear AAAI Members,

Please note that the deadline for submissions to the Third AAAI Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence is next Wednesday, February 8 at 11:59 PM PST.

EAAI-12 will be held in conjunction with AAAI-12 on July 23-24 in Toronto, Canada. It provides a venue for researchers and educators to discuss pedagogical issues and share resources related to teaching AI and using AI in education across a variety of curricular levels (K-12 through postgraduate training), with an emphasis on undergraduate and graduate teaching and learning. The symposium seeks contributions showing how to more effectively teach AI, as well as how themes from AI may be used to enhance education more broadly (for example, in introductory computing courses or as a means for teaching computational thinking). We encourage the sharing of innovative educational approaches that convey or leverage AI and its many subfields: robotics, machine learning, natural language, computer vision, etc.

EAAI-12 provides several of paths for participation, including the following:

Full-length papers (6 pages) and presentations for the symposium
Extended abstract/poster contributions (2 pages) highlighting preliminary or ongoing work, or describing an educational innovation proposed to be presented in a demonstration session
Model AI Assignments highlighting innovative ready-to-adopt materials
A workshop for mentoring new faculty, instructors, and graduate students on teaching
An Educational Video Track within the AAAI-12 Video program
A Student/Educator Track within the AAAI-12 Robotics Exhibition and Workshop

For more information and the complete Call for Papers, please consult the AAAI symposium website (http://www.aaai.org/Symposia/EAAI/2012/eaai12call.php) or the EAAI-12 site (http://eaai.stanford.edu/).

We hope to see you in Toronto in July!

Best regards,
Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence

AAAI invites proposals for the 2012 Fall Symposium Series, to be held Friday - Sunday, November 2-4 at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia adjacent to Washington, DC. The Fall Symposium Series provides the AI community with a unique venue in which researchers from different areas of AI can:

Present speculative work and work in progress
Hold focused discussions over several days
Build new communities for emerging disciplines
Build ties between existing disciplines

The series brings together a set of two and one-half day symposia at a common site, providing a unique and intimate forum for colleagues in a given discipline. The series also provides an important gathering point for the AI community as a whole. Efforts are made to keep registration and lodging costs low so that graduate students can afford to attend. The series is designed to minimize the administrative burden on the organizing committees of the individual symposia. AAAI manages registration and local arrangements, and provides organizational support, publicity within the AAAI community, and publication of working notes for distribution within the symposium and (optionally) the community at large.

The series runs twice yearly (spring and fall). Approximately eight symposium topics will be selected for the 2012 Fall Symposium Series. Accepted proposals will be distributed as widely as possible over the subfields of AI, and balanced between theoretical and applied topics. Symposia bridging theory and practice and those combining AI and related fields are particularly solicited.

Proposals for symposia should be between two and five pages in length, and should contain:

A title for the symposium.
A description of the symposium, identifying specific areas of interest, and, optionally, general symposium format. The symposia are intended to encourage presentation of speculative work and work in progress, as well as completed work. Therefore, ample time should be scheduled for discussion. Novel programming, including the use of target problems, open-format panels, working groups, or breakout sessions, is encouraged.
The names and (physical and electronic) addresses of the organizing committee, preferably three or more people at different sites, all of whom have agreed to serve on the committee.
A list of potential participants who have been contacted and who have expressed interest in participating. A common way of gathering potential participants is to send email messages to email lists related to the topic(s) of the symposium. Note that potential participants need not commit to participating, only state that they are interested.

Ideally, the entire organizing committee should collaborate in producing the proposal. If possible, a draft proposal should be sent out to a few of the potential participants and their comments solicited.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Symposium Series Standing Committee (Chair: Matthew Taylor, Lafayette College; Cochair: Gita Sukthankar, University of Central Florida; and Associate Chair: Alan Schultz, Naval Research Laboratory).

The criteria for acceptance of proposals include:

Perceived interest to the AAAI community. Although AAAI encourages symposia that cross disciplinary boundaries, a symposium must be of interest to some community within the AAAI membership. Symposia that are of interest to a broad range of AAAI members are, of course, also encouraged.

Expected size. Although the series supports a range of symposium sizes (roughly 25-75), the target size is around 40 participants.

Lack of established venues on the topic. The AAAI Symposium Series is intended to nurture emerging communities and topics, so topics that already have yearly conferences or workshops are inappropriate.

Qualifications of the organizing committee. The organizing committee should have (1) a good technical knowledge of the topic, (2) good organizational skills, and (3) connections to the various communities from which they intend to draw participants. Committees for cross-disciplinary symposia should adequately represent the disciplines to be covered by the symposium.

Symposium proposals should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than February 3, 2012. Proposals that are submitted significantly before this deadline can be in draft form. Comments on how to improve and complete the proposal will be returned to the submitter in time for revisions to be made before the deadline. Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent to submitters around February 24, 2012.

The submitters of accepted proposals will become the chairs of the symposium, unless alternative arrangements are made. Symposium organizing committees are responsible for:

Writing short calls for participation and registration, which AAAI will distribute to its membership
Additional publicity of the symposium, especially to potential audiences from outside the AAAI community
Reviewing requests to participate in the symposium and determining symposium participants
Collecting submissions for the symposium technical reports from the selected participants
Scheduling the activities of the symposium
* Preparing a short review of the symposium, to be printed in AI Magazine.

Please submit (preferably by electronic mail) your symposium proposals, and inquiries concerning symposia, to:

AAAI Fellows Nominations: February 15

Dear AAAI Members,

Please note nomination and reference forms for the 2012 AAAI Fellows Program are due Wednesday, February 15.

Each year, the Fellows program honors a small group of individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. Contributions may occur within one or more settings, including industry, government, and academe. Both individual technical contributions and significant extended service to the field are considered in the selection process. Fellows contributions may include substantial efforts leading to the fielding of AI technology. Evidence of technical contributions are typically in the form of technical results and publications, but other forms of evidence include outstanding contributions to academic, government, and industrial group efforts, patent awards, and notable software.

Nominees for Fellow must be either life members of the Association or current members of AAAI with membership for the past three (3) consecutive years. Usually, only members who have contributed to the field for a decade or more after receiving their Ph.D. (or are at an equivalent career stage) will be selected. The nominator or one of the people providing a reference must be a AAAI Fellow who is a current member.

For more information, please see http://www.aaai.org/Awards/fellows.php, or contact us at fellows12@aaai.org.
IAAI-12 Papers Due January 17

January 17: IAAI-12 Paper Submissions Due
Conference Site: http://www.aaai.org/Conferences/IAAI/iaai12.php
Paper Submission Site: http://iaai.confmaster.net

Dear AAAI Members,

The Twenty-Fourth Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI-12), to be held July 24-26 in parallel with AAAI-12 in Toronto, Canada, will focus on successful applications of AI technology. The conference will use technical papers, invited talks, and panel discussions to explore issues, methods, and lessons learned in the development and deployment of AI applications; and to promote an interchange of ideas between basic and applied AI.

Paper submissions are due Tuesday, January 17, 2012. IAAI-12 will consider papers in two tracks: (1) deployed application case studies and (2) emerging applications or methodologies. Submissions should clearly identify which track they are intended for, as the two tracks are judged on different criteria. Case-study papers must describe deployed applications with measurable benefits that include some aspect of AI technology. The goal of the emerging application track is to "bridge the gap" between basic AI research and deployed AI applications, by discussing efforts to apply AI tools, techniques, or methods to real world problems.

Prospective authors are required to register at the IAAI-12 paper submission site at http://iaai.confmaster.net. The software will assign a password, which will enable authors to log on to submit an abstract and paper. For further information about paper formatting and submission requirements, please review the Call for Papers at http://www.aaai.org/Conferences/IAAI/2012/iaai12call.php.
ICWSM-12 Tutorial CFP Extended: January 18

Dear AAAI Members,

On behalf of the ICWSM-12 Conference Committee, we are pleased to announce that the deadline for Tutorial Proposals for the Sixth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-12) has been extended to Wednesday, January 18 at 11:59 PM PST. The ICWSM-12 Tutorial Program will be held on the first day of the conference, June 4, at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

The Tutorials Day provides an opportunity for junior and senior researchers to explore exciting advances in methods for capture, analysis and visualization of online data. The tutorials will provide an opportunity for cross-disciplinary engagement and a deeper understanding of new tools and techniques than can be gleaned from short presentations. Anyone interested in presenting a tutorial at ICWSM-12 should submit a proposal to the 2012 Tutorials Chair via EasyChair (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwsm2012t).

Please refer to the complete Tutorial Call for Proposals (http://www.icwsm.org/2012/submitting/tutorials/) for information about suggested topics and submission guidelines, or write to us at icwsm12@aaai.org.

We hope to see you in Dublin this summer!

Regards,
*** OVERVIEW ***

AAAI-12 is the Twenty-Sixth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The purpose of this conference is to promote research in AI and scientific exchange among AI researchers, practitioners, scientists, and engineers in related disciplines. AAAI-12 will have multiple technical tracks, a best paper track highlighting recent results presented at sister conferences, student abstracts, poster sessions, invited speakers, and exhibit programs, all selected according to the highest reviewing standards. A vibrant workshop, tutorial, and doctoral consortium program will immediately precede the main technical program. The Twenty-Fourth Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI-12), showcasing successful applications of AI technology, and the Third Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence (EAAI-12), which provides a venue for researchers and educators to discuss pedagogical issues and share resources related to teaching AI a
nd using AI in education, will run in parallel and are included in the the AAAI-12 registration.

AAAI-12 will comprise several technical tracks, including the main technical track and special tracks on AI and the Web, Cognitive Systems, Computational Sustainability, and Robotics. The program will also feature the keynote Presidential Address by Henry Kautz, as well as several invited talks (listed below) and special events celebrating the Alan M. Turing Centenary.
**** SUBMISSIONS ****

AAAI-12 welcomes submissions on mainstream AI topics as well as novel crosscutting work in related areas. Topics include but are not limited to the following:

Agent-based and multiagent systems
Cognitive modeling and human interaction
Commonsense reasoning
Computer vision
Constraint satisfaction, search, and optimization
Evolutionary computation
Game playing and interactive entertainment
Information retrieval, integration, and extraction
Knowledge acquisition and ontologies
Knowledge representation and reasoning
Machine learning and data mining
Model-based systems
Multidisciplinary artificial intelligence
Natural language processing
Planning and scheduling
Probabilistic reasoning
Robotics
Web and information systems

Papers that extend the state of the art, and explore parts of the design space of AI that are not well explored are particularly encouraged. A full list of keywords is available at the AAAI-12 website.

In addition to the main technical track, each special track will have its own submission process and review criteria, and will have its own program committee of reviewers with appropriate backgrounds. However, the tracks will be an integral part of the conference program and will be subject to the same high standards and rigorous review that are traditional in AAAI. In the proceedings, the special track papers will not be distinguished from the main track technical papers. The Chairs may move submissions between tracks in case that allows for more appropriate reviewing.

For complete submission and formatting deadlines and guidelines for all AAAI and IAAI programs, please refer to the individual Call for Papers for each track at the URLs listed below.
ICWSM-12 Call for Tutorials, Papers, Demos

Dear AAAI Members,

Please note the following important upcoming deadlines for submission of tutorial proposals, paper abstracts, full papers, poster papers, and demo papers to the Sixth International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM-12):

January 9 (11:59 PM PST): Tutorial proposals due
January 13 (11:59 PM PST): Abstracts due for full, poster, and demo papers
January 18 (11:59 PM PST): Papers due for full, poster, and demo papers

The Tutorials Day provides an opportunity for junior and senior researchers to explore exciting advances in methods for capture, analysis and visualization of online data. The tutorials will provide an opportunity for cross-disciplinary engagement and a deeper understanding of new tools and techniques than can be gleaned from short presentations. Anyone interested in presenting a tutorial at ICWSM-12 should submit a proposal to the 2012 Tutorials Chair via EasyChair (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwsm2012t).

The Call for Papers for the technical program (full papers and posters) and the Call for Demos are available at the ICWSM-12 website (http://icwsm.org/2012/). Please refer to the following URLs for complete instructions about registering, preparing your paper for review, and submission.

Call for Papers (abstracts, full papers, poster papers)
http://icwsm.org/2012/submitting/call-for-papers/

http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icwsm12

All submissions must be made through the ICWSM web-based paper submission site at URL above. Authors should register well in advance of the abstract deadline to avoid any delays on the deadline day. All papers must be in trouble-free, high resolution PDF format, formatted for US Letter (8.5" x 11") paper in AAAI two-column style. Reviewing for the ICWSM Conference is blind to the identities of the authors, so authors must prepare their papers for a blind review. Authors should adhere strictly to all the formatting and submission guidelines provided at the websites listed above.
